Unlike a modern quartz watch, this has a physical balance wheel that swings back and forth like a mechanical watch, but it is powered by a battery and a transistor rather than a mainspring.
The Result: You get a smooth sweeping second hand (like a Rolex or Omega) but without the need to wind it up.
